PRODUCT REVIEW: Flora Freedom Three New Flavours

One thing I love about writing my blog, is that every now and then I am made aware of a product that is not something, that I might normally purchase. 

I've tried some diary free products in the past, and for me each time there was just something lacking. I guess because I don't have to cut dairy out of my diet - I knew I could have the real thing - and the substitutes didn't really do anything for me. 

That all changed, when a discovery of the three new flavours of Flora Freedom was made!   Immediately I was intrigued, mainly because of the flavours.   Avocado Oil & Lime, Walnut and Coconut and Almond now we are talking!    Frankly,  I am no dairy free spread specialist, but this is something that I have definitely not seen in the supermarkets before. 

Made with plant oils, free from artificial preservatives, colours, flavours, and is certified by The Vegan Society.   So, if you follow a plant based diet, then these are definitely for you.  For those who don't, just like me - you will have a welcome surprise - at how tasty and creamy these little spreads actually are! 

I seem to not be the only one giving them the seal of approval.   Great British Bake Off Quarter Finalist, the lovely Benjamina Ebuehi has collaborated with Flora for the launch and been creating some delish looking offerings using the spreads.     I mean just look at this Cheesy Tear & Share Bread does that not make you want to jump in the pictures and devour?! 

Just goes to show the versatility of things you would never expect.   The mind is overun with ideas of things to make with these lovely little spreads.    I have been particularly taken with the Avocado and Lime one.   I may, or may not, have been having it for lunch in some way or form since I have got it. The subtle flavour and the way it melts into a freshly toasted bagel is completely divine, something I would never have expected from a non dairy product.  It's the basis to this fabulous recipe which frankly wouldn't be the same with normal butter!

Or if you have more of a sweet tooth, than a savoury one.. You can also use the spreads in a different way to make something sweet, nutty and darn scrumptious

All three of these flavours are 45-60% less saturated fat than butter, and 100% of the oils used come from plants.     Each spread clocks in at 62 calories per 10g portion, which is more than enough to spread on your toast, or added to your scrambled eggs to give them a fab flavour, without breaking the calorie bank!

The spreads lend themselves to be used in any sweet or savoury dish that would usually have butter in, but with the added vegetable oils giving them the flavour to jazz them up a bit.

For example; The Coconut and Almond spread, I am sure would add an incredible flavour to your sponge cakes or a killer secret ingredient to some oaty flapjacks (new recipe idea me thinks!).   Avocado and Lime, not only great on bread or bagels, but definitely would add a new flavour platform to your fave Mexican dishes.   Perhaps try adding a bit to your filling when cooking your next batch of fajitas.  Or use it to add flavour to chicken for an amazingly tangy salad ingredient!

Then there is the Walnut spread.   Now this will become a kitchen staple, mainly because it can be used in both sweet and and savoury.   Stick it with some cheese in a tart or a quiche for a match made in heaven, or use it to make an incredibly indulgent icing for a coffee and walnut cake.

The opportunities for use, are endless, and I have no doubt they are going to become a staple in my household - if they can hang around for long enough!
